Stanley was prospected by John Stanley in 1863, and established as a mining supply center in the 1870s.

Stanley is part of the Sawtooth National Recreation Area, created in 1972. The SNRA is a protected wilderness. We offer adventurers and sightseers the opportunity to enjoy nature's wonders now and for generations to come.

Lower Stanley is a quiet place to enjoy the beauty of pristine wilderness. It is one mile northeast of Stanley on Highway 75 along the scenic Salmon River
